From the Head Teacher, Mrs Sally Miner

Welcome to the Ryders Hayes School website. I hope you find the information provided about our school useful and informative. Should you require more detailed information please contact the school to speak to a member of staff; request a copy of our prospectus and our weekly bulletin, or to arrange a visit. Our overriding aim is to foster a positive, safe and happy learning environment, where our children and staff can flourish, both academically, spiritually and socially, to be the very best they can be. Our child-centred approach, addresses the needs of the whole child; providing them with: excellent role models; high aspiration, expectation and levels of support; inclusive practice; a sense of community and strong moral purpose, along with the encouragement of a life-long love of learning.  Through our teaching at Ryders Hayes we aim to develop the values: of communication, cooperation, resilience, adaptability, enquiry, thoughtfulness, morality and respect in our children.

Ryders Hayes school is a two form entry primary academy for children aged 3 to 11, with a 52 place Nursery. We have over 460 children on roll. At Ryders Hayes each child will receive consistently good and outstanding teaching in Literacy, Numeracy and all subjects of the National Curriculum. Children have access to the latest educational technology and software, in a modern and well maintained environment, through an enriched curriculum. Music is an important aspect of school life, with numerous individual instrumental, ensemble and performance opportunities; a strong school choir, and Music taught throughout school by a specialist teacher. We are a Forest School, helping our younger children to access a new skill set from learning outdoors. Our approach to spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) aspects of learning, alongside both taught and real opportunities for citizenship, aims to ensure our pupils develop into confident, independent and caring young people with a thirst for life and learning. Our children are polite, friendly and well behaved. They are encouraged to take responsibility for the leadership of their school through involvement in our School Council and as House Captains and Sports Captains. Our motto is lived out on a daily basis:

Be the best you can be wavy banner 2

The school has a wide range of extra-curricular activities, covering both sporting and creative sessions, from Athletics to Girls’ Football; Drama to Art Club. There is an excellent out of school club – Early and Knight Ryders, offering quality child care provision from 7.30am until 5:45pm, with regular holiday play schemes, and a homework club on Wednesdays and Fridays. Ryders Hayes has received several national awards in recognition of its excellent provision. Ofsted has judged the school to be Outstanding; we have two Leading Aspect Awards – one for Excellence for all in Early Years, and one for Excellence in Secondary Transition as part of the Shire Oak Primary Partnership. The school has a Gold Quality Mark for Every Child Matters, and has been awarded the ICT Mark. We also hold a range of awards such as the Healthy Schools Award and Active Mark. We are committed to continuously strengthening our partnership with parents in order to achieve the best outcomes for every child. Parents are always welcome in our school. We understand the significant effect they have on their child’s educational. We believe, that by working together, progress can be accelerated, and have therefore embarked upon a whole school approach – IMPACT in Learning, to ensure parental engagement with their child’s primary education. Each year, parents are expected to work alongside their children in specially designed workshops, so that parents are fully equipped to support their child’s learning at home. We also hold regular parents’ meetings; specific workshops and celebrations, and have Home/School Diaries to encourage dialogue between home and school, and to share information. Parents have access to our Learning Platform and are invited into school to see their children receive special awards. We publish a weekly school bulletin to keep parents informed. Our Parent Support Advisor is also available to discuss matters with parents and provide further advice and support, as well as family learning opportunities.

What is an Academy?

Ryders Hayes has Academy Status. This means we are a state school offering free education to any child who meets our admission criteria, but are independent of the Local Authority. We are not selective and serve our catchment as any other Walsall school. We receive our funding directly from the Department for Education; employ our own staff; are responsible for the school building and grounds, and have a little more flexibility with our curriculum. Our governors believe that being an academy gives parents in our catchment area a better deal for their child.

What is a Teaching School?

One of the first Primary National Teaching Schools in 2011, Ryders Hayes was designated after a successful pilot, by the National College for Teaching and Learning. We deliver bespoke training and continuing professional development to hundreds of teachers and support staff across the Region. This helps us to stay at the cutting edge of education: a number of our staff are experienced facilitators, trained to support other teachers in developing their classroom practice; train future leaders of education, and to provide school to school support. We work in partnership with another Teaching School – Manor Primary School, Coseley. We also work alongside Birmingham City University (BCU) and a local alliance of Walsall schools, to lead initial teacher training, School Direct, helping to grow our outstanding teachers of the future. Ryders Hayes School is a happy; caring; vibrant, innovative and forward-looking school; yet one steeped in tradition, with a strong moral code. With a reputation for high quality education within its community, and children at the heart of everything we do, the staff and pupils look forward to meeting you.
